Thought it might be interesting to peek behind the curtain… or inside the booth to answer some questions that I get about voice over from both clients and friends alike.
Friends ask, “What exactly is voice over?” My standard answer is – it’s all around you. Commercials on Radio and TV. It’s the voice behind that documentary that you watched last night. When you saw that animated video on You Tube about how to get more sales leads. That voice of the character on Family Guy or American Dad. When you called that automated phone line, or even when you talked to Siri (her real name is Susan Bennett, and she’s a Voice Over Artist) on your iphone… Voiceover and voice acting is everywhere. Quite honestly, I left quite a few other outlets off the list.
“So, how’s that work?” is often the next question. The process is quite different for everyone, actually. But most of the time we start with something like you’re reading right now. Words. Words on a tablet, a computer screen, or on a sheet of paper. But, hopefully when you’re done, you have a magic piece of audio that sells, informs or entertains. We as voice-actors strive to become that voice inside your head.
